Bangor was originally founded in 1903 as a nine-hole course. In 1905 part of the course moved and it was extended to 18 holes. James Braid designed the layout and, although it has been modified in parts, Bangor retains many of its original features.
The course is not especially difficult but it is enough of a challenge to entertain good players without discouraging the less able.
It has attracted several major events, including the Ulster and Irish Professional Championships, and Pro-Ams in which famous golfers like Peter Allis and Tony Jacklin have featured.
