Kirkistown Castle is a traditional links and the present course layout was designed by the legendary golf course architect James Braid. It consists of two loops of 9 holes each beginning and ending at the clubhouse. It is reputed to be one of the best Par 69 (slope 121) courses you are ever likely to encounter.
Michael Bannon PGA (coach to Rory McIlroy) says,
"I grew up and learned to play my golf at Kirkistown Castle. It is a wonderful links course with a great mix of holes to test all areas of your game. It is still my favourite place and in 40 years I have never tired of playing this course.”
Don’t be put off by the Par of 69. At 6167 yards it is longer than some courses with a Par of 71. The course has changed little since James Braid left his stamp on it in 1934 and few would argue that his design has not stood the test of time. The wonderful variety of holes will test every facet of your game and being beside the Irish Sea wind is usually another factor that has to be managed. Every day is a new challenge and you really should experience this course – you will not be disappointed. If you like links golf you will love Kirkistown Castle. This is golf played as nature intended.
