CASTLEROCK GOLF CLUB will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of other Northern Ireland venues such as Royal Portrush and Portstewart as a host of the Irish Open, as the club has submitted its bid to stage the 2021 event.

The club announced its intention to host the national championship by beginning talks with European Tour officials over returning the tournament back to Northern Ireland.

Castlerock will hope to become the third course in Northern Ireland to stage the Rolex Series event, along with Royal County Down.

Organisers will be excited at the prospect of the event returning to Northern Ireland after the success of The Open at Royal Portrush, where Shane Lowry recorded his first major victory.

The course has arguably always lived in the shadow of its famous neighbours, Portstewart and Royal Portrush, but it is every bit as good.

Changes have been made in recent years to improve the course in preparation for a bid to secure the lucrative event.
